Juan Luis Londoño Arias, known by the name “Maluma”, was born on January 28, 1994 in Medellin, Colombia. Son of Marlli Arias and Luis Alfonso Londoño, with an older sister named Manuela.
He is a sports fan and especially soccer, a sport he practiced for eight years in a row where he occupied the lower divisions in the Atlético Nacional and Equidad Club Deportivo teams. Passionate about music, a passion that gradually became known both at home and at school, where he had his first contact with the public. They were his fellow students, who in a singing contest heard his voice in the song “Tengo ganas”, by the singer-songwriter Andrés Cepeda and they awarded first place without problems.
At the age of 15 he composed a song entitled “I don’t want to”, which surprised music producers who asked him to record an album, asking him to use a more sonorous name, easy to remember and accepted by fans of the urban genre. The idea of taking the first syllable from the names of the most significant people in his family was born: Marlli, his mother; Luis, his father and Manuela, his older sister. At that moment, MALUMA was born.
He rose to fame in his native country in 2011. His debut album, Magic (2012), was commercially successful in Colombia and a year later it was Latin Grammy nominee for Best New Artist. In 2015 he released his second studio album, Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy, the one that entered number one of the main chart of Latin albums of Billboard.
For the Billboard Latin Music Awards, it was New Artist of the Year Award nominee, at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, he chose the best Latin song for “Borró cassette” and at the 2016 Latin American Music Awards, in the categories favorite urban music song for “Borró cassette” and favorite collaboration for “El perdedor” with Yandel, respectively.
At the end of 2016 he ventured into the trap genre with the song “Cuatro babys” in collaboration with Noriel, Bryant Myers and Juhn. It was a trend in 2016, since it was awarded for being one of the most famous Latino artists internationally, noted for being the composer who has released the most songs throughout that year.
