## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

The Territory is a 2022 documentary film that provides an immersive look at the struggle of the Indigenous Uru-eu-wau-wau people in the Amazon. Since their initial contact with non-Native Brazilians, the Uru-eu-wau-wau population has dwindled and their culture has faced significant threats. Although they were promised dominion over their rainforest territory, the community has contended with illegal incursions from mining and logging operations. The film documents their fight against encroaching deforestation caused by farmers and illegal settlers. These challenges have intensified due to land-grabbing invasions encouraged by right-wing politicians, including former President Jair Bolsonaro. As deforestation escalates, the film highlights the global implications of these environmental threats. The cast of the documentary includes Bitaté Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, Neidinha Bandeira, Ari Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, and Txai Suruí. Released in the United States on August 19, 2022, the film has a runtime of one hour and twenty-five minutes. Produced under the National Geographic Documentary Films banner, the project examines the tireless efforts of the Indigenous people to protect their home from environmental destruction.
