## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

The Garden of Sinners: A Study in Murder – Part 1 is a 2007 Japanese animated film produced by ufotable based on The Garden of Sinners novels by Kinoko Nasu. Directed by Takuya Nonaka, the film features voice performances by Maaya Sakamoto, Ken'ichi Suzumura, Takako Honda, and Hiroki Tôchi. It is the second installment in the film series, preceded by Overlooking View and followed by Remaining Sense of Pain. The story is set in August 1995, beginning when Mikiya first meets Shiki in a white kimono during a snowing day. Later, at the high school freshmen ceremony, Mikiya sees Shiki in the crowd, chases after her, and introduces himself. However, Shiki hides a big secret while a wave of bizarre murders occurs with many loose ends and no suspects. The narrative raises questions regarding who to believe, who the murderer is, what the secret of Shiki is, and specifically who SHIKI is.
