## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

The Commander of the Lucky Pike is a 1973 Soviet war film directed by Boris Volchek. Set in the Polar region during 1942, the narrative focuses on the strategic efforts to defend Murmansk against German forces. The story centers on the submarine Sch-721, which is widely regarded as a lucky vessel. Its captain, Aleksei Strogov, is noted for his skill in navigating difficult situations and his development of tactics for conducting torpedo attacks without the use of a periscope, a technique that faces skepticism from his peers and leadership. The plot intensifies when the submarine is tasked with rescuing the crew of another Soviet vessel that has settled on the seabed with limited oxygen supplies. Aleksei Strogov successfully executes the rescue operation, though he ultimately loses his life in the process. The film, which is categorized under the war, action, adventure, and drama genres, runs for one hour and forty-one minutes and was released in the Soviet Union on April 29, 1973.
