## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

Scattering CJ is a 2019 documentary film directed by Andrea Kalin that explores the impact of a profound personal loss. The film follows the story of CJ Twomey, a young man who was known for his love of travel. After CJ ended his own life at the age of 20, his family experienced significant grief and guilt. In response to this tragedy, his mother, Hallie Twomey, sought a unique way to honor her son’s memory. She issued an open request on Facebook, asking travelers to help fulfill CJ’s wish to see the world by scattering portions of his ashes in locations of beauty or special significance. This decision transformed a private mourning process into a public journey involving many individuals. The documentary features appearances by Heidi Beintema, Alex Davis, April Davis, and Bill Keene. By inviting others to participate in this global memorial, the project examines how a grieving mother opened her life and heart to the public to find meaning following her son’s death. The film was released in the United States on September 14, 2019.
