## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

Scarecrows is a horror film released in the United States on September 28, 1988, with a runtime of one hour and twenty-three minutes. The story follows five men who execute a heist of the Camp Pendleton payroll and take a pilot and his daughter hostage, forcing them to fly the group toward Mexico. During the journey, a double cross occurs, resulting in one of the thieves parachuting down with the stolen money into an abandoned farm that is surrounded by strange scarecrows. The remaining members of the team then jump out after their former partner and the loot. All of these events unfold over the course of a single very dark night. The film carries a rating of R. Background information notes that scarecrows are traditionally placed in open fields wearing old clothes to prevent birds from disturbing or feeding on recent crops, serving as iconic symbols and decorations for the autumn season in gardens, porches, and patios.
