## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

Rain or Shine is a 1930 American pre-Code film directed by Frank Capra. The film stars Joe Cook as Smiley Johnson, Louise Fazenda as Frankie, and Joan Peers as Mary Rainey, with William Collier Jr. also among the cast. In the film, young Mary Rainey takes the reins of her deceased father's failing circus following his death. The traveling circus operates twice daily, rain or shine. Running into financial troubles, Mary hopes to bring fortune back to her ragtag band of ragged shoeleather performers with the help of the inimitable Smiley Johnson. The story features a bit reminiscent of the Marx Brothers, where the circus performers are up to some ridiculous antics at a dinner party with the family of Bud Conway, who is Mary's beau. The film features romance, drama, comedy, and music, and has a runtime of one hour and twenty-eight minutes.
