## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

How to Be a Good Wife is a 2020 French comedy-drama film also known by its French title, La bonne épouse. Directed by Martin Provost, the film is set in Alsace, France, and begins in the year 1967. The story follows Paulette Van Der Beck, played by Juliette Binoche, and her husband, who have spent many years running the housekeeping school of Bitche. Their primary mission at the school is to train teenage girls to become the perfect housewives during an era when women were expected to be subservient to their husbands. Following the sudden death of her husband, Paulette discovers that the school is on the verge of bankruptcy and is unexpectedly forced to take over its leadership. While preparations are underway for a housekeeping competition television show, Paulette and her lively students begin questioning their traditional beliefs as the nation-wide protests of May 1968 transform society.
