## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

Greetings from the Colony is a documentary film released in 2011 with a runtime of one hour and fourteen minutes. The film explores a personal family history that intersects with broader historical events during the colonial era. The subject of the film is Suzanne, who was born during colonial times to a Belgian agent and a Rwandan woman. When Suzanne is only four years old, in the year 1930, her father brings her to Europe to provide her with a European education. Suzanne's father is the grandfather of the director. The director made the film twenty years after discovering, at the age of twenty-seven, that she had a mixed race aunt. The documentary connects this specific familial narrative with the larger history of the period.
