## Executive Summary & Cultural Positioning

Bluebeard's Eighth Wife is a 1938 American romantic comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch. The story follows an American multi-millionaire who marries his eighth wife, the daughter of a French Marquis, only to find her unwilling to be just another number in his long line of ex-spouses. She employs her own strategies to tame him, setting the stage for a battle of wits and wills.

As a product of the classic Hollywood era, the film is significant for its pairing of stars Claudette Colbert and Gary Cooper under the direction of Lubitsch. It is based on the 1921 French play La huitième femme de Barbe-Bleue and captures the essence of 1930s romantic comedy through its focus on wealthy characters and witty, fast-paced interactions set against the backdrop of the French Riviera.
