MOSCOW (Sputnik) – School teachers and bus and train drivers took to the streets in Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state, 9News reported.

Thousands of teachers went on strike in Sydney, the capital of NSW, demanding a salary increase of between 5 and 7.5% in annual terms and in protest at the extensive workload due to staff shortages.

According to the Australian Department of Education, in NSW more than 3,000 teaching positions in schools remain vacant and therefore a large proportion of teachers are forced to work outside their area of expertise.

In addition, local media report that some 5,000 school employees are at risk of being suspended from work, because they have not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The teachers’ protest coincided with the demonstrations by bus and train drivers in the same state, who are also demanding a salary increase of more than 2.5% and protesting against the use of cheap trains bought abroad.

As the 9News chain indicates, the drivers refuse to drive the trains bought in South Korea because they do not comply with safety regulations.
