[나인스타즈=신경화 기자] On the afternoon of the 20th, a press call for the play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ was held at the Hongik University Daehak-ro Art Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul. Director Kim Jeong-gyun, Park Hae-mi, Kim Ye-ryung, Lim Joo-hwan, Tae Hang-ho, Kim Hyuk-jong, Bae Jeong-hwa, Lim Ye-na, Oh Hyun-cheol, Park Na-yeon, Kim Dong-gyu and others attended.
The play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ premiered in 1947 and won the Pulitzer Prize the following year.
The role of Blanche, who lives in reality and fantasy, unable to forget the moment of her first love, her pure first love, Alan.
Artistic Director Kim Jung-gyun said, “This is a work that the great playwright Tracy Williams made in 1947. Personally, I did this work 10 years ago, in 2009. In this frustrating and uncomfortable era, we talked a lot with our director, Kim Bong-gun.
What if we could give our audience that inconvenience? As we share and overcome that discomfort together, especially through Blanche, a woman who lives a life of going back and forth between fantasy and reality is completely destroyed by Stanley, who is animalistically adapting to reality. Also, Stella and Stanley were forced to live a life in compromise with reality, and the conflicts and confrontations between the three were naturally uncomfortable for us to express.” He said the intention of the director.
Actor Lim Joo-hwan said, “I took a lot of reference to Marlon Brando’s acting. And Marlon Brando also has such strong male hormones, but his voice isn’t really that thick. So I was convinced that I could do it, and I wanted to do it because Marlon Brando did it.”
“The first thing I thought while playing the role of Stanley was that all the women in this theater would be uncomfortable. Because of Stanley, the real reality of Stanley’s personality. This is where Blanche’s fantasy and Stanley’s reality collide.”
But anyway, because the reality in which people live is stronger, some of Stanley’s expressions and some of Blanche’s fantasies collide, leading to the fact that reality has to win anyway, and there are many reasons why Stanley wants to be uncomfortable. The character I hate gaslighting, violence and male supremacy are all combined together, so I had a strong desire to try a role like this.” said
Actress Park Hae-mi said, “Why did this work come back to this age? At that time, for me, this is a work from 49 or 48, so why is it 7 or 80 years old? At that time, I was the same when I came across this. I thought it was the same at that time and now. What has changed a lot, that there is not much, and life in the era of industrialization in the United States Industrialization of the United States, the downfall of prestigious families, discrimination, etc.
“I hope that many people will feel it once again while watching the original performance and seeing the performance again. I participated because I thought that it was not bad to reenact the distorted desires in the drama of the stage. In that sense, I thought it would be good to be together.”
The play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ will be performed at the Grand Theater of Hongik University Daehangno Art Center until November 21st.
