the essentials in brief

  • Brazil fails at the 2022 World Cup in a penalty shoot-out against Croatia.
  • Neymar is devastated afterwards but is comforted by Ivan Perisic’s son.
  • After the game, the disappointed superstar hints at his Seleção retirement.

The Brazilian dreams of world champion title number 6 ended in the penalty shoot-out against Croatia. The Seleção failed at the 2022 World Cup because of the runner-up world champion and his outstanding goalie Dominik Livakovic. The Brazilians, who were considered the top favourites, are devastated afterwards.

After the end of the game, superstar Neymar sits in the center circle, burying his face in his hands. The PSG player put Brazil ahead in extra time but missed the penalty shoot-out as the designated fifth taker. Croatia’s Ivan Perisic offers Neymar consolation, Dani Alves can lift him up after a few minutes.

Then another consolation donor comes into the middle circle: ten-year-old Leo Perisic, who wants to do the same as his father. First, a security officer stands in the way. Neymar shakes the little comforter’s hand and hugs him.

How things will continue with Neymar and the Seleção after the 2022 World Cup is open. He does not close the door to the national team, said the superstar after the quarter-finals. But he cannot guarantee 100 percent that he will return. First he has to analyze and consider what is best for him and Brazil.

Do you hope Neymar will also play at the 2026 World Cup?

Before the 2022 World Cup, he said it would be his last World Cup. In another vulnerable tournament, he would only be 34 in 2026.
