Oumar Solet: From street footballer to next Salzburg superstar?

Oumar Solet has been lacing up the shoes for Red Bull Salzburg since summer 2020. After initial difficulties, the 21-year-old was able to earn a regular place this season – and is now even dreaming of playing for the French national team.

Oumar Solet earned a place in the Salzburg starting XI with strong performances.

Erling Haaland, Naby Keita, Sadio Mané, Amadou Haidara, Duje Caleta-Car – the list of prominent Salzburg departures, it could go on almost endlessly. Despite the numerous upheavals in all transfer periods, the “Red Bulls” dominate the Austrian Bundesliga, once again there seems to be no way to go to the Mozartstadters this year. One of the reasons for this is Oumar Solet, who secured a regular place in Matthias Jaissle’s team and only had to concede five goals in the previous eight competitive games alongside his central defender colleague Maximilian Wöber.

The start for the 21-year-old in Salzburg did not necessarily go according to plan. After a cruciate ligament rupture at the beginning of 2020, the Frenchman still struggled with knee problems when he arrived in Salzburg. “My start was of course not easy. I could not completely convince the coach (Jesse Marsch, note). With a few appearances you hardly have a chance to shine. Even without knowing a word of German, it was not easy for me. It friends from France were often visiting to make things easier for me. But now everything is getting going well, “remembers Solet on the club’s homepage back to its difficult early days.

Dream of the Equipe Tricolore

Naturally, the first points of contact with football are even further back. Solet grew up in Paris and discovered his love for round leather on the concrete squares of the French capital: “I have four brothers, three older and one younger. For us there was only football, in the morning, at noon, in the evening, in good or bad weather I didn’t even play for a club until I was eleven. It’s a little different than here. In Ile-de-France, you can still find really good footballers on the streets. That’s how I still play today, with him necessary fun. ”

It is also this fun that helps the French to make his strong appearances in Salzburg. The decision to move to the Salzach in spite of several inquiries from clubs in the French Ligue 1 has therefore already paid off in full. But as with Haaland, Mané & Co., the cops for Solet are probably just a transition point on the way to absolute world class. And maybe on that one in the French national team?

“When I talk to my friends from France, with Amine Gouiri and Maxence Caqueret, we push each other. We have high goals. I told them that I would play with the Équipe Tricolore in two years. If everything fits, it can go very quickly with me, “says Solet. First of all, everyday Bundesliga life is on the agenda for the French against WSG Tirol on Saturday – and the 21-year-old also wants to take the next small step from a former street footballer to the next Salzburg superstar in Innsbruck.
