The sports world is today full of superstars, but there are few who can be called legends. With great talent and a short stubby he did John McEnroe quickly a name in the world’s tennis tournaments during the 1980s. But to become the greatest of all, he needed to overcome his demons, both those in his head and those on the tennis court.
John McEnroe was the tennis world’s most hot-headed and controversial player, but also one of the most naturally gifted. Throughout his playing career he had to overcome the demons in his head but also those he experienced on the court. The documentary McEnroe is made of Barney Douglas.

An insight into the star’s career, rivalries, feuds and conflicts
John McEnroe was number one in the tennis world for four consecutive years and his and Björn City battles on the tennis courts defined tennis in the late 1970s. But McEnroe’s feuds both on and off the courts around the world showed clear inner conflict.
Never before shown archival material from, among others, the US Open and Wimbledon, as well as private footage are part of the documentary, as well as contributions from John’s children and from his wife Patty Smyth. Contributors also make icons such as Billie Jean Kingour Swedish tennis legend Björn Borg and Keith Richards.
The documentary film McEnroe can be streamed on SVT Play from Sunday 25 June.
