Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG plan to fully switch to electric car supply in markets where possible by the end of this decade. In 2022, battery-powered models will be offered in all segments represented by the Group. In 2025, Mercedes-Benz AG will launch three new electric cars, and alternatives with electric motors will be available for all current models. Between 2019 and 2026, investments in internal combustion engines and hybrid technologies will have decreased by 80%, while the group plans to invest more than 40 billion euros in achieving the new goals between 2022 and 2030.
To speed up the reorganization of production, the company has acquired the British-based electric motor manufacturing company YASA. Through this transaction, Mercedes-Benz AG will gain access to unique axial flow motor technology and know-how that will enable the production of ultra-high performance electric motors. It is planned that the battery capacity of Mercedes-Benz cars will exceed 200 gigawatt-hours in the near future, also obtaining unprecedented reach indicators and a very short charging time. The new generation of batteries will be suitable for integration in more than 90% of all Mercedes-Benz cars and vans.
Mercedes-Benz AG is also currently developing a new Vision EQXX electric car, which will be presented to the world next year. Its reach will exceed 1000 kilometers. A special multifunctional working group was set up to develop the Vision EQXX, which also includes experts from the Mercedes-Benz F1 High Performance Powertrain division. The technological solutions developed in the Vision EQXX project will be adapted for potential use in other new electrical models as well.
At the same time, work is underway to expand the charging network for electric cars. Mercedes me Charge is already one of the largest charging networks in the world. It has more than 530,000 AC and DC charging points worldwide. Mercedes-Benz AG is also working with Shell to expand the charging network. By 2025, customers will have enhanced access to Shell’s Recharge network, which has more than 30,000 charging points, including more than 10,000 heavy-duty stations worldwide.
Thanks to early investment in production, Mercedes-Benz AG is already able to produce electric cars. In 2022, eight electric Mercedes-Benz models will be produced at seven plants on three continents. In addition, all Mercedes-Benz AG passenger car and battery assembly sites will switch to carbon-neutral production from 2022 onwards. Finally, a new battery recycling plant is planned to open in 2023 in Kuppenheim, Germany.
To ensure this comprehensive transformation, Mercedes-Benz AG is also investing significant resources in improving the skills of its workforce. TechAcademies offers employees training in future-oriented specialties. In 2020 alone, more than 20,000 employees were trained in e-mobility in Germany. Mercedes-Benz’s operating system development plans, in turn, create 3,000 new software engineering jobs worldwide.
