Marvel star as a wrestler: Trailer for the celebrated biopic “Cassandro” on Prime Video – Kino News

Film biographies of real people continue to be extremely popular, as the mega-hit “Oppenheimer” proves. With “Cassandro,” which looks very promising in the turbulent trailer, a new title will soon be coming to streaming.

Since the 1940s, there have been so-called “exoticos” in the macho world of Mexican wrestling (Lucha Libre). These are male fighters who adopt feminine or stereotypically homosexual aspects of their ring personality and compete heavily made-up and in women’s clothing.

For decades, these wrestlers were always beaten up by the “real guys” for the amusement of the fans and were guaranteed losers. But then Saúl Armendáriz alias Cassandro suddenly appeared on the scene and became a national favorite thanks to his charm and fighting ability. The biopic “Cassandro” now tells his eventful and moving story.

In January 2023, the film celebrated its world premiere at the renowned Sundance Film Festival. “Cassandro” will launch worldwide on the streaming service on September 22, 2023 Amazon Prime Video.

The production was directed by Roger Ross Williams, who became the first African-American director to win an Oscar in 2009 thanks to his documentary “Music By Prudence”.

In the leading role you can expect Mexican star Gael García Bernal, who you may know from the cinema hits “Amores Perros” and “Babel” or the streaming series “Mozart In The Jungle”. He most recently starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in “The Mother” on Netflix and played the title role in Marvel’s extraordinary Halloween special “Werewolf By Night” on Disney+.

“Cassandro” on Prime Video: That’s the story

Saúl Armendariz (Gael García Bernal) was born in El Paso, Texas, to Mexican immigrants. Although he grew up primarily in the USA, from an early age he also spent a lot of time in Juárez, the city on the other side of the border from where his family comes. At the age of 15, Saúl decides to drop out of school and go to Mexico to train as a professional wrestler.

At 18 he was allowed to have his first big fights. Like all luchadores, he plays a role in the ring – initially as the masked villain El Topo, but hardly anyone notices him. But then he is discovered by the young trainer Sabrina (Roberta Colindrez). She convinces Saúl, who until then had only lived out his homosexuality secretly, to change his image and from now on compete as an exotico under the name Cassandro.

Contrary to Saúl’s own expectations, fans love his new identity and to a certain extent he even turns the macho world of wrestling completely on its head. He also enjoys finally being able to show much more of his true self in public. However, his newfound popularity also has an impact on his relationships with his mother (Perla De La Rosa) and his lover Gerardo (Raul Castillo)…
