Manage participant audio and video permissions in Microsoft Teams meetings

Prevent use of microphone and camera

Before the meeting

After you’ve scheduled the meeting and sent the invitation, the meeting organizer can disable microphones and cameras so participants can’t use them during the meeting. All participants (but not presenters) join the meeting with their microphone and camera off.

  1. Go to calendar and double-click the meeting.

  2. Choose Meeting options at the top of the screen.

  3. Deactivate allow microphone for participants? or Allow camera for participants? and choose Save.

During the meeting

The organizer and presenters can disable the microphone or camera of all participants or individual participants at any time during the meeting.

Obs!: This option is currently not available for organizers and presenters joining the meeting from Teams room devices.

Here’s how to disable all participants’ microphones or cameras

  • Choose more options More options icon for Microsoft Teams beside Participant and then Disable microphone for participants or Disable camera for participants.

    Do not allow participants to turn on the sound

Tips: If you only want to mute participants without disabling their microphones, select Mute all participants.

If you later want to activate everyone’s microphone or camera, select more options More options icon for Microsoft Teams again and again Allow microphone for participants or Allow camera for participants.

Here’s how to disable an individual’s microphone or camera

Tips: Participants can signal that they want to speak by raising their hands.

Allow someone to unmute or share their video

That person can now unmute themselves or share video.

Obs!: This feature is currently not available on Teams room devices.

  • Select and hold the person’s name, either on the main screen or in the participant list, then select Disable microphone or Disable camera.

    Select Do not allow sound on or Do not allow video sharing

Tips: Participants can signal that they want to speak by raising their hands.

That person can now use their microphone or camera.
