Luis Suárez, injured five days after the derby against Real Madrid

Atlético de Madrid was risking its future in the Champions League against Porto and the match at the Do Dragão stadium started in the worst way for the rojiblancos interests. Luis Suárez, their scorer and reference in the area, had to leave the field in the 13th minute of the game due to a muscle injury.

Mateus Cunha took the place of the Uruguayan, totally desolate on the bench, where he even covered his face to hide his tears. Suárez was Simeone’s bet in attack together with Antoine Griezmann, who enjoyed the best chance of the Madrilenians in the first half in a center to the far post that failed to hit an empty goal.

Without the Uruguayan in the area, Atlético hardly created danger in the first part of the game in the Portuguese capital. In fact, Sérgio Conceição’s men had several opportunities to score. The Spanish team needed to beat the Portuguese and wait for a puncture from Milan at San Siro against Liverpool, already classified as first in group B.

In the absence of the relevant medical tests, everything indicates that Suárez will be out on Sunday in the game against Real Madrid at the Santiado Bernabeu, decisive for the fight for the League. The colchoneros, with one game less, are ten points behind the white team, which leads the league championship with great solvency.

Suárez is the team’s top scorer this season with 8 goals in 20 games. However, of all his goals only one was in the Champions League, specifically the one that gave Atlético the victory in Milan with a penalty shot in injury time. It was their first goal away from home in European competition since 2015.
