Liverpool upset by video referee after 2-2 at Everton

Liverpool have failed to draw level with Everton on points in the English Premier League. The defending champion did not get more than 2: 2 in the local derby against the leaders on Saturday and is therefore three points behind as the first pursuer after the fifth round. The anger about this with the “Reds” was great because of several controversial decisions by the video referee. Arsenal lost to Manchester City 0-1 in the Europa League dress rehearsal.

As the British broadcaster Sky Sports reported, Liverpool demanded an explanation for the controversial offside decision of the video referee after the game. Jordan Henderson had scored the supposed winner in stoppage time. But because of an alleged offside position by Sadio Mane, the goal was denied. On television images, however, no offside position could be seen with the naked eye.

“I’m a real supporter of the VAR. But I saw the action on the laptop, there is nothing, no offside. And everyone tells me that it wasn’t offside. That doesn’t improve my mood,” said Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp . In addition, they have an injured person in Virgil van Dijk and maybe a second with Thiago Alcantara. “That wasn’t our day,” emphasized the German. The video referee was not used after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s hard entry against Van Dijk. Pickford didn’t take a warning. Van Dijk then had to leave the pitch injured. A hospital examination should clarify the extent of the injury. “It doesn’t look good,” said Klopp, concerned about his defensive star. British media reported suspected cruciate ligament rupture and a break of several months.

Although Liverpool failed in their attempt to inflict their first defeat on the leader, Klopp was very satisfied with the performance of his troops and attested them a “top performance”. The Gunners at Manchester City didn’t even score a point. Raheem Sterling became the match winner for the “Citizens” in the 23rd minute. Five days before the Europa League guest appearance at Rapid in the Allianz Stadium, Arsenal botched the dress rehearsal, at least in terms of the result. The performance was quite appealing. “We are of course disappointed, but on the other hand we played a good game and you could see that the gap with ManCity was only very small,” said Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno. His team is still fifth with nine points, City is ninth with seven points after only four games.

Chelsea are in sixth place after a 3-3 home win against Southampton. For the favorites from London, the German additions Timo Werner (43rd, 57th) and Kai Havertz (59th) met. Goals from Danny Ings (43.), Che Adams (57.) and Jannik Vestergaard (92.) as well as a new faulty Chelsea goalie Kepa secured the club of coach Ralph Hasenhüttl one point. Southampton is tenth on seven points. Manchester United are still behind in 14th position, but thanks to three late goals at 4-1 at Newcastle, the “Red Devils” were able to make up some ground.
