Korea World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index ranked 5th… Asia No. 1

5 steps up from last year’s top 10… Singapore, China, Japan, etc.

Korea ranked fifth in the global innovation index published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the highest ever.

In Asia, it has emerged as an innovative powerhouse beyond Singapore, China, and Japan.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office on the 20th, in this evaluation conducted for 132 countries, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom took first to fourth places following last year.

In Asia, after Korea, Singapore ranked 8th, followed by China and Japan at 12th and 13th, respectively.

Korea rose five places from last year and was evaluated as the country with the most improved innovation capacity among the top 20 countries.

In the field of human capital and research, which evaluates investment in the future, among a total of 7 evaluation areas, including 5 in input and 2 in output, Korea has maintained the world’s first place for three consecutive years.

Despite the COVID-19 situation, two evaluation fields in the calculation sector, which measure the performance of innovation activities due to the increase in domestic and overseas intellectual property rights applications, rose from 10th last year to 5th this year.

In terms of 81 detailed indicators, Korea ranked first in nine indicators, including patent applications, as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP).

Kim Yong-rae, Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, said, “The reason why the global innovation index has risen despite difficult situations such as COVID-19 is that innovative efforts and achievements to overcome the crisis have been well received.”
