Support in Japan for the continuation of the Olympic Games seems to be diminishing. In a poll by the Japanese news agency by telephone Kyodo News showed that more than 80 percent of the respondents think that the global sporting event should not be held next summer.
More than 35 percent answered that the Tokyo Games should be canceled altogether. According to 44.8 percent of the Japanese surveyed, it is better to postpone the event again. It is not known how many people took part in the study.
A state of emergency was declared last week in Tokyo and some surrounding regions, as the number of corona cases is rising rapidly. The support for the Games among the population was already limited and only seems to be declining.
According to 80 percent of people surveyed by Kyodo News, the government intervened too late. Tokyo reported nearly 1,500 infections on Sunday. It was the sixth day in a row that the Japanese capital had more than a thousand new corona cases.
The Tokyo Games have been postponed by a year due to the corona pandemic. Both the Japanese authorities and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have already said that postponing again is not possible. Both parties are working hard to make the Games possible next summer.
It is not yet entirely clear what exactly the largest sporting event in the world will look like, although it still seems that the athletes will have to be quarantined for at least two weeks upon arrival in Japan. The Games start on July 23.
