James Cameron plans to relaunch Terminator franchise with focus on Artificial Intelligence

The Canadian filmmaker is certainly one of the best directors in the history of cinema. He brought to life films like Avatar or Titanic who monopolize the first places in the ranking of the most profitable films in history.

The one who has lived in the United States for many years also started the Terminator franchise. The first two opuses he made were hugely successful. Subsequently, the saga will lose interest over the years because of the departure of James Cameron. The climax of this slow agony will be the bitter failure experienced by Terminator : Dark Fate. An unfortunate end which is not to the liking of the Canadian director who plans to relaunch the saga. And obviously, things are going very well.

James Cameron wants to direct the saga towards Artificial Intelligence

The director launched the franchise with Terminator in 1984 and its sequel in 1992. Two films that both met with phenomenal success. The third opus for which Cameron ceded the production to Jonathan Mostow was less well received by the public. Same thing for the following parts released respectively in 2009, 2015 and 2019.

For the latest film, Cameron has certainly returned to the franchise as a screenwriter and producer. However, creative disagreements with the director led to the film’s failure. Last December, he unveiled his plans for a possible ‘Terminator’ movie and possibly even reviving the franchise.

“If I were to make another Terminator feature and maybe try to revive the franchise, I would focus on the artificial intelligence side and less on bad robots gone crazy… It’s under discussion, but nothing has yet to be decided,” he said.

The director has now confirmed the project at a conference for professionals in new technologies, Dell Technologies World. According to reports from the conference, Cameron began writing a new Terminator movie three months ago “but he wants to see how artificial intelligence evolves, before going any further.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger will not return in the new film

Schwarzy rose to international fame through his role as a killer cyborg in the Terminator franchise. He starred in the first three installments, but did not participate in the fourth installment, Terminator Renaissance, even if his image was included thanks to the CGI. He then returned in 2015 in Terminator Genisys and in 2019 in Terminator : Dark Fate which unfortunately turned out to be a huge flop, losing over $120 million at the box office.

In response to this, the actor decided it was time for him to distance himself from the saga.

“The franchise is not over. I’m done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on when it comes to Terminator. Somebody has to come up with a great idea,” he said.

Cameron notably seems to have found a new idea, but it will be without his actor. The director is currently very busy with Avatar. He is preparing the third film which should be released next year followed by two other sequels. The films are scheduled to be released at two-year intervals. Avatar 3 hits theaters on December 20, 2024 and the next two on December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028 respectively.
