Everything was perfect. A family cruise in the Mediterranean, a romantic atmosphere and a love crowned by a marriage proposal. A cruise ship was sailing towards Civitavecchia (near Rome), when Silvio Maisti, 35, decided to pull out all the stops. On Saturday evening, the carrier residing in the suburbs of Rome took the stage, took the microphone , got down on one knee and proposed to Valentina, the mother of his 14-month-old baby boy.

Witnesses to this great moment, members of the family filmed the scene, which they broadcast live for relatives who remained on land. The young mother said yes and the party continued until late in the evening. The next morning, at around 6:20 a.m., Silvio felt unwell while in bed in the cabin he shared with his fiancée and their baby. Valentina, an early childhood educator, immediately alerted their neighbors and crew members, reports “The Corriere della Sera”.

The emergency services could not do anything for the unfortunate man, who died of a heart attack as the liner arrived at its destination. The relatives who were on board accuse the rescuers of having reacted too late and of not having done enough to save Silvio. Docking at Civitavecchia was scheduled for 7 a.m. and disembarking at 8 a.m. “The police forces were only authorized to board at 2:30 p.m. (…). In the meantime, we found ourselves without any help and the commander did not even offer us his condolences”, denounces Valentina’s father.
