iOS 12: Warnings about unhealthy air quality irritate users

Munich, 17 degrees and unhealthy – according to Apple’s weather app in iOS 12. The warning is permanently displayed for many other German cities.

The weather app of the iPhone warns permanently in many cities in Germany from high nitrogen dioxide concentrations – where the values come from is unclear.

Apple’s weather app is from iOS 12 prominently inform about “unhealthy air quality” or “unhealthy air for sensitive groups”. However, in many cities in Germany, the warning message appears almost permanently without it being clear where the data came from and what exactly it means. In addition, confusion is causing Apple’s speech assistance system Siri to provide dissenting information on request.

The Weather app also introduces a new “Air Quality Index” value that does not match the information from The Weather Channel, which serves as the data source for Apple’s Weather app.

Siri finds the air in Cologne “good”, while the weather app announces a health alert. Both actually get their data from The Weather Channels – which provides more information.

In Cologne, the weather app on Thursday morning, for example, warns of unhealthy air for sensitive groups and lists an air quality index of “42”.

The Weather Channel, however, describes the air quality in Cologne as “good”. If the user asks Siri about the air quality in Cologne, he receives the answer that it is “good”, but at the same time a nitrogen dioxide value of “42” is listed, without describing this information in more detail. According to data from Weather Channel, the NO lies2Value in Cologne but at 28 micrograms per cubic meter of air.

The same phenomenon can be observed in other cities: For example, for Munich Siri pronounces a health warning and calls a nitrogen dioxide value of 117, in contrast, The Weather Channel 21 micrograms per cubic meter and indicates the air quality in the Bavarian capital also as “good”. According to Siri, the air quality in Berlin is “appropriate”, but Apple’s weather app calls it “harmful”.

Demand from Apple, where the data came from and what they mean, has so far remained unanswered. The divergent statements in different parts of the operating system indicate that this is a bug
