“I just held her hand”



The veteran Korean actor Oh Yeong-suThe 78-year-old Golden Globe winner for ‘The Squid Game’ has been accused of sexual misconduct. After the first paperwork, he has been released without charge, but the legal process continues.

, prosecutors in the South Korean city of Suwon revealed on Friday that they had accused Oh of inappropriately touching a woman in mid-2017. The alleged victim filed the complaint in December 2021 and authorities closed the case four months later, but then it has been reopened, at the request of the victim, according to the Yonhap news agency. Oh denied the accusations when he was questioned by prosecutors.

Oh explained what happened to the Korean television channel JTBC: “I just held her hand to guide her across the lake. I apologized because she said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it, but that doesn’t mean she admits to the charges.”

In ‘The Squid Game’, Oh plays contestant number 1, the oldest of the survival competition, a role for which he won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series and a nomination for Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama series.

On the other hand, an official from the Suwon court quoted by the AFP agency assures that “everything reported by the local media is not objectively correct.” The agency added that the Korean Ministry of Culture withdrew an institutional TV ad on innovation featuring Oh following the accusation.

Born in 1944 in Kaesong, now part of North Korea, Oh moved his family to the South before the inter-Korean war. He began acting professionally in 1967 and has spent most of his career in live theater. In 2013, he claimed to have acted in more than 200 stage productions, including the Korean adaptations of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and ‘Faust’. In the cinema, his best-known role came with the film ‘Spring, summer, autumn, winter… and spring’, by Kim Ki-Duk.
