Mönchengladbach Borussia Mönchengladbach II will host KFC Uerdingen on Saturday, where Heiko Vogel was a coach before joining VfL. He looks back on the problematic situation and praises the courageous new beginning.
When Borussia Mönchengladbach II receives KFC Uerdingen on Saturday (2 p.m.), it is not a normal regional league game for coach Heiko Vogel. Because between May and September 2019 Vogel had his last coaching station before Borussia at the third division team at the time. A lot has happened in Krefeld since then. In the preseason, the team held the class in the 3rd division, but then did not get the license. The club was completely without a team and practically did not have one three weeks before the start of the season.
But at the start of the season of the regional league, there was a Uerdingen team on the field, almost without training, which first picked up a few clear claps. Last weekend, however, there was the first point win against Alemannia Aachen. “Before every game, you have to realize that you should never take a game lightly in this class,” says Vogel, not only referring to the KFC Uerdingen. Vogel has words of praise for Uerdingen’s trainer Dmitry Voronov and sporting director Patrick Schneider: “It’s incredibly brave to tackle the whole thing like this. But both of them put a lot of passion into it. “
That certainly also applies to Vogel’s time in Uerdingen, with which he also associates very positive things despite the shortness of the job. “When we won the Niederrhein Cup in Wuppertal, you could see what fantastic fans the club has. The Grotenburg also breathes a very special spirit, as does football in the city. That was definitely great, ”says Vogel, who nevertheless has a fatal infrastructure – the club has not played a home game since May 2018 because the Grotenburg is not available for security reasons and has not yet been renovated, and is also missing Training grounds, a club area and a clubhouse – and had to deal with the “antics” of then chairman Mikhail Ponomarev, which was undoubtedly not always a pleasure. “It is imperative that the situation for the team improve, but something is going to be done. A few things just happened that were a shame, ”says Vogel.
However, this chapter is completely ticked off for Vogel, the focus is on the game. And above all the fact that I want to defend the standards better. Because from such situations even a team that is by no means well-rehearsed could make a profit. It is not yet clear who is available at Borussia for this. “At the beginning of the week we only had twelve players in training, a number of the guys were lying flat. But they all have a negative PCR test. We could be pretty complete, but certainly not all of them are in full possession of their powers, ”explains Vogel. Even at the unfortunate 2: 3 in Oberhausen on Saturday, Vogel had to do without Michel Lieder and Tom Gaal on the defensive.
