Haut-Uélé: a new measles vaccination campaign targets 77,000 children in 12 health centers in Dungu

The Provincial Government of Haut-Uélé launched, on Wednesday August 10, 2022, the measles vaccination campaign in 12 health centers in Dungu.

Indeed, more than 77,000 children are expected during this vaccination campaign which benefits from the support of the humanitarian NGO Médecins Sans Frontières for a period of five (5) days.

According to the Chief Medical Officer of this health zone, Dr Innocent Awuleri, the situation is alarming in this part of the country. He calls on parents to take their children to vaccination sites to help them prevent this disease.

“We are among the most affected areas in the province. Measles is a contagious and deadly disease. The situation is alarming. This is what justifies this vaccination campaign. We encourage parents to come in large numbers, take their children to sites that are indicated by licensed nurses. There are health centers and advanced sites that the health authorities have prepared. Because, until now, there is no medicine to treat this disease apart from the vaccine. he warned.

In February 2022, nearly 200 children were infected with measles in the province of Haut-Uélé.

As a reminder, measles is a serious viral infection for young children, but which can be easily prevented by a vaccine. The disease is spread through the air by respiratory droplets produced by coughing or sneezing, saliva (drinks, etc.), contact with a contaminated surface, physical contact (handshake, hug) or by transmission from the mother. – child (pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding).
