It has been almost 17 years since the six most famous friends in American pop culture were together on a film set.
But a few days ago they met again to record the special program The One With The Reunion.
The reunion of Friends featured the series’ original cast: Matthew Perry (Chandler), Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), Courteney Cox (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Matt LeBlanc (Joey) and David Schwimmer (Ross).
Recording The Reunion It was originally scheduled for last August, but was delayed due to the pandemic of coronavirus.
A broadcast date has not been announced yet, but it is expected to air in the coming months via HBO Max, the platform where the original series can now be seen.
Friends It was the most successful sitcom of the 1990s (aired from 1994 to 2004) and has found a new generation of fans (but also critics) thanks to television reruns and broadcast services streaming como Netflix.
The actors themselves are also the executive producers of The Reunion, along with series creators Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, with Ben Winston directing.
Why the reunion?
The details of the special program are a secret, but there are things that are known about the expected reunion.
The filming of the special took place on the original set of the series, the stage 24, at the Warner Bros. facility in Burbank, California.
TMZ reported that while a live audience participated in The Reunion, were “mostly union extras of actors, with covid-19 tests made and hired for the event “, as the pandemic prevented the attendance of fans.
The set, which was partly outdoors due to the preventive protocols of the pandemic, included the iconic water fountain in which the cast appeared at the beginning of each episode of the series, with the same song from The Rembrandts, I’ll Be There For You.
It remains to be seen how many other old elements of the series will appear, but the images circulating on social networks seem to show the much loved atmosphere of Monica’s apartment, including the sofa and the empty frame on your door.
Chandler causing trouble (again)
Chandler Bing was known for his cool and dry wit, and that’s what Matthew Perry looked like on Saturday when he posted, and later deleted, a photo of himself in a makeup chair, along with the caption: “Seconds before eating a brush. makeup. Not to mention the reunion with my Friends“.
The actor has been one of those who has spoken the most about the reunion and was the first to confirm that there was a delay in filming last year.
He also presented a range of products based on his character during the pandemic, the proceeds of which would go to help health services.
A special without a script?
Since HBO confirmed the special, there has been much speculation about the extent, if any, the actors will reprise their roles.
Speaking on the BBC’s Graham Nortonm show, David Schwimmer gave some details.
“I’ll be myself. I’ll be David,” Schwimmer said of the special that has no script. “We’re not in character … it’s all of us, real people.”
However, he quickly added a cryptic caveat suggesting otherwise: “But there is a part, I don’t want to reveal it … where we all read something.”
To be fair, clarity was never Ross’s strong suit. The debate over whether he was taking “some time” with Rachel still continues to this day.
Jennifer Aniston provided more (or less) clarity (or confusion) on the subject while speaking to Variety magazine last year.
“I won’t be Rachel, although in a way I am,” he said. “Well, we’re all kind of little fragments of them. Not really. But yeah.”
Although the details of the recording are yet to be known, audience posts on social media suggest that they had a true nostalgia trip.
A Matthew Perry fan post included a picture of a goody bag from Central Perk, the coffee shop the group used to visit in most episodes.
