Upon approval, businesses could face a $10,000 fine for each undocumented employee and the state could revoke their business license. The law also requires hospitals to collect and report health care costs for undocumented people. Many construction workers who spoke to CBS say they are afraid of the future.

“Many workers are leaving thinking they are going to be deported, so they go to other states,” says José, an employee. “Everyone is really worried…we just want to work to help our families.”

The bill also cracks down on health care and says hospitals must report a patient’s immigration status if they are using Medicare. According to the governor’s website, Florida taxpayers have paid more than $226 million in health care costs for undocumented migrants.

In recent days videos have been shared where the works in the state have been paralyzed and the crop fields are without laborers after the measure. With thousands of migrants crossing the Texas border, Governor DeSantis hopes this bill will discourage them from coming to Florida.

“I’m leaving Florida, I have to do it for the good of my children,” Dolores Lucas says through tears, adding that what she and her five children are facing is very painful since only one of her children was born in the United States and the four others are from Guatemala, their country of “I can’t afford to put my children at risk, I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m leaving Florida.”

According to the Immigration Policy Institute, nearly 800,000 undocumented migrants live in Florida. Many of them work in agriculture, construction and as caretakers. From skyrocketing land prices to anticipated labor shortages, some in agribusiness say they are worried about the future of the industry in Florida.

“Migrant communities are 20% of our state workforce, contributing more than $13 billion to the state in taxes each year,” David Metellus, Director of Policy and Policy for Florida Immigration Solution, told CBS.

“Florida likes to believe that the economy is not made up of immigrants,” Santra Denis of the Miami Worker Center told NBC. “We know that specifically with care workers, nurses, home health aides, nannies They’re overwhelmingly immigrants, housewives, and imagine if they didn’t come to work. Imagine the impact that would have on our ability to go to work.”
