Kinds of Stars in Space

According to the book Mini Encyclopedia of Space by Yusuf Somadinata (2021: 38-44), a star is a very hot ball of gas and is an object outer space which emits light. There are pseudo stars and real stars. The core of a star is like a giant nuclear furnace in which hydrogen gas changes to helium accompanied by the expenditure of large amounts of energy.

Some of that energy can be felt by humans in the form of light and heat. The universe contains trillions of stars and only 2000 of them can be seen with our eyes.

Furthermore, the book also explains the various stars in the sky space, among them are:
  1. Sun: The closest star to Earth at a distance of about 149.6 kilometers.

  2. Proxima Centauri: The closest star to the earth other than the sun. This red dwarf is 4.2 years from Earth.

  3. Alpha Centauri: The third closest star to Earth at 4.4 light -years away.

  4. Rigel’s Star: Rigel’s star is a blue supergiant star. This star actually consists of four star systems. With the main star Rigel A or commonly referred to as Rigel only, has a temperature of 12,100 degrees Kelvin.

  5. Betelgeuse star: Betelgeuse star is a red supergiant star and is one of the largest stars in the universe. This star has a surface temperature of 3,500 degrees kelvin.

  6. Sirius Star: Sirius Star is the brightest star visible from Earth. Sirius star is actually a dual star system, namely Sirius A is bright and Sirius B is a dim dwarf. Sirius will continue to be the brightest star visible from Earth for the next 210.00.

  7. Star VY Canis Majoris: This star is one of the largest and most luminous stars known to man. The star VY Canis Majoris is a red supergiant 4,900 light years from Earth. The star of VY Canis Majoris is a lone star.
