No prestigious opponent for FC Nantes in the Europa League! The group draw took place this Friday (August 26), before the announcement of the dates for these matches (Saturday) and the 4th day of Ligue 1 where the Canaries won today 3-1 against In Toulouse.

For their return to the European Cup, 18 years after the last participation (2004 in intertoto against Slovan Liberec), the Canaries avoided Manchester United, Arsenal or AS Roma. The group draw took place this Friday afternoon: the players of Antoine Kombouaré, who watched the draw alongside the coach, will face the Greeks of Olympiakos, the Germans of Friborg and the Azeris of Qarabag in the next weeks. A small disappointment for the Nantes coach, at the microphone of Simon Reungoat.

It’s a small disappointment, they would have liked to play a big one! Some were talking about Manchester, Arsenal… and then finally it’s a difficult group, because we are the little thumb against clubs that are used to the European Cup: the Greek champions, Olympiakos , Qarabag champion of Azerbaijan and Freiburg who finished 6th in Germany. We are very small, we are going to discover, and we will work to create surprises. With hindsight, tomorrow we will say that there is a shot to play!

A wink of fate

The Europa League will be an opportunity for coach Antoine Kombouaré to meet his little brother at heart, Christian Karembeu, now manager at Olympiakos. “I have a weakness for Olympiakos because I have my little brother there, Christian Karembeu. To meet to confront each other, necessarily that means something for me, but for him too, especially since he is trained in Nantes.. We’re going to call each other to laugh at this draw. Our families will be happy in New Caledonia. And then Nantes is his training club! A wink of fate is beautiful. Of course the strongest team in this group is Olympiakos, who couldn’t qualify for the Champions League play-offs.”

The calendar summary of these European meetings which start in 15 days fell this weekend: first match on September 8 for FC Nantes against Olympiakos, at the Beaujoire stadium.

The season has started

The FCN won 3-1 against Toulouse in front of 27,000 supporters. Led 1-0 at the break, the Canaries overturned the match by scoring 3 goals in 15 minutes from the start of the second period. Thanks in particular to the two recruits, Guessand and Mohamed, accompanied by Moses Simon. A reaction of pride that pleased Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré. After this victory, vice-captain Ludovic Blas appeared in front of the press to explain the controversy linked to his real-false start from FC Nantes.

Courted by Lille, he had threatened a few days ago not to play against Toulouse, before finally announcing that he was continuing in Nantes this season. “It was quite complicated for me, I didn’t know what I was going to do and where I was going to end up (…) I played the Lille and Marseille game out of respect for my teammates and the club because I owe this club a lot., but at one point it was too complicated for me. I asked the coach not to play to try to get answers and I got some. Now I’m clear in my head!”

Transfer confirmed for Sala

“FC Nantes also welcomes the decision rendered on appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The CAS has entirely rejected the appeal lodged by Cardiff City and confirmed the decision rendered by FIFA on September 25, 2019, concerning the transfer of the player Emiliano Sala. The court therefore ruled, as FC Nantes had argued since the start of the proceedings, that the player’s transfer to Cardiff City was complete when he died tragically in an aviation accident. the CAS ordered Cardiff City to pay the transfer fee and sentenced the club to a historically high sum, in respect of procedural costs and arbitration costs.

FC Nantes is delighted that this procedure – initiated by Cardiff City then delayed on numerous occasions by Cardiff City – which has been difficult for all those close to Emiliano, is finally over.

The other matches : Brest-Montpellier 0-7; Troyes-Angers 3-1, and Lorient-Clermont 2-1. Rennes was beaten by Lens 2-1 on Saturday.
