Police sources have informed the Efe agency that Carvajal’s arrest took place around 9:15 p.m. (Spanish peninsular time) on Torrelaguna street in the capital by agents of group two of Fugitives of the National Police in collaboration with agents of the American DEA.

Hugo Carvajal was in a home protected by several people. In that house, according to sources, he was a refugee without ever going outside. He was arrested in April 2019 also in Madrid after entering Spain with a false passport, but in September of that year the National Court denied his extradition on understanding that the United States was claiming him for “a political motivation”, for which he was released .

The Chicken Carvajal was Hugo Chávez’s head of military intelligence between 2004 and 2011, and has been claimed by the United States for his alleged links to drug trafficking and the plundering of the state-owned company Petróleos de Venezuela. The general is considered a key piece in the investigations into Chavismo, having broken with the Nicolás Maduro regime, which accused him of treason when he recognized Juan Guaidó as interim president in February 2019.

The former general had offered the Spanish justice information in exchange for not being in prison. “With an eye on the reestablishment of democracy in Venezuela and with the full intention of contributing to the high national interests of what I consider to be my second homeland, Spain, I place my trust in the independent and professional Spanish judges, with whom I will collaborate without reservations, ”he insisted when he appeared before the National Court two years ago.

Carvajal has insisted since leaving Venezuela on his intention to contribute to the fall of the Maduro government with information on the springs of the State that he claims to know. “I do nothing by publishing the drug trafficking networks of the high government when such information must be exclusively in the hands of bodies capable of investigating it. I do nothing by publishing the front men of the PSUV leaders and their assets abroad when such information must be in the hands of agencies that investigate money laundering in the United States, Europe, Lebanon, Dubai and Hong Kong ”, he assured.
