December 9th – no day like any other: Lionel Messi set a goal record

Gerd Müller scored a total of 85 goals in the 1972 calendar year. A record that lasted 40 years – until Lionel Messi came along. In 2012, the Argentine superstar even scored 91 hits at the end of the year.

Müller’s record fell on December 9, 2012. Messi, who had 84 goals at the time, scored twice in FC Barcelona’s 2-1 win against Betis Sevilla. It was Messi’s hits number 85 and 86 and thus the jump to the top of the leaderboard.

Müller was calm about the loss of the record. “I’m really happy for him, he’s the best player in the world right now and it’s just fun to watch,” said the former nation’s bomber at the time: “Personally, records don’t mean much to me, but if someone deserves it to overtake me, then Messi. “
