Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) won the 104th edition of the Tour of Flanders after the 244 km between Antwerp and Oudenaarde. The Dutchman beat his breakaway companion, the Belgian Wout Van Aert, in a sprint.
The decision was made for a few centimeters between the two rivals, both world cyclocross champions. For the winner, who is the grandson of Raymond Poulidor, this success in the Round comes 24 years after that of his father, Adrie Van der Poel.
The world champion Julian Alaphilippe, who escaped with the first two, fell 35 km from the finish. As he appeared to be speaking into his earpiece, the Frenchman crashed into an organization motorcycle and fell heavily. He couldn’t leave.
