“Unfortunately, our fire situation has taken a turn for the worse with the West Yellowknife Fire now posing a real threat to the city,” Northwest Territory Environment Minister Shane Thompson told a news conference. The air was thick with smog and fire emissions. As of last Wednesday evening, the wildfires were within 17 kilometers (11 miles) of the provincial capital. Canada is experiencing its worst spring fire season on record, with 431 active fires as of last Sunday, an increase of five fires for Saturday, according to the Canadian Joint Forest Fire Center.

On Wednesday, Canadian authorities ordered residents of Yellowknife, one of the largest cities in northern Canada, to flee amid warnings that raging wildfires could reach it by the end of the week.
“Sadly, our fire situation has taken another turn for the worse with the West Yellowknife Fire, which now represents a very real threat to the city,” Northwest Territory Environment Minister Shane Thompson said at a news conference.
The scenes show the region’s sky turning red amid air pollution with thick smoke and fire emissions.
