Barcelona will start the course with a lower ratio in most groups

Something as worrying as the demographic decline can have positive effects in areas such as education. The next academic year will start on the 13th in Barcelona with smaller groups in compulsory education. Thus, 75% of P3 groups in the city’s public and concerted schools have fewer than 25 students, and 44% fewer than 22, the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona announced this Friday. The ‘Minister’ of Education and president of the consortium, Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray, explained that this advantageous educational situation will occur due to the combination of this population decline, the presence of more teachers and the start-up of more schools. The combination is specified in 11,271 children in P3 (901 less than in the previous year), 295 more professionals (239 of them teachers) and 8 new public centers, four of them will cease to be arranged.

In ESO, 55% of the groups have a ratio of less than 30 students, 38% of 30 and 6% exceed that figure, and in primary school the capacities have also been “modified”, according to the manager of the consortium, Mercè Massa. In total, there will be 173,928 students in the city’s schools and institutes, 5,646 less than last year; of which 36,252 in Infant (2,272 less), 80,031 in Primary (2,168 less) and 57,645 in ESO (1,207 less).

Majority of enrollment in public centers

Gonzàlez-Cambray stressed that this is the first time that ESO students have been lost. Enrollment in public centers, meanwhile, has grown by one point compared to last year, when it first exceeded the one agreed upon, now standing at 52.6%. The data has allowed Jordi Martí, Deputy Mayor for Education of the Barcelona City Council and Vice President of the Consortium, Jordi Martí, to ensure that “the commitment to public education” is consolidated in the city.
