The yellows have the illusion of reaching their third final of Libertadores, after those of 1990 and 1998.
Barcelona Sporting Club, which in 1961 was Ecuador’s pioneer in the Copa Libertadores de América, is the national team with the most victories in the continental tournament.
The current Ecuadorian champion and current Cup semifinalist leads with 88 wins the ranking of the national teams with the most victories in Conmebol’s most prestigious club competition, followed by its archrival, Emelec, with 66, and Liga de Quito, with 62.
The ranking is completed by El Nacional (53) and the new Independiente del Valle (21).
“The Ecuadorian teams with the most victories in Conmebol #Libertadores! @BarcelonaSC, current semifinalist of the Cup, leads the table with successes ”, recalls the Libertadores Twitter account.
The Canarian squad began its journey in the Copa Libertadores in 1961, the second edition in the history of the competition, when the number of participants increased from 7 to 9, with Ecuador and Peru joining the tournament that year. The champion was Peñarol again.
Since then, with the 2021 edition included, there have been 27 appearances for the yellows, of which they reached the semifinal round on nine occasions (1971, 1972, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1992, 1998, 2017 and 2021) and twice that of the final (1990 and 1998).
Four years ago, in 2017, the Canaries failed to advance to their third Cup final by losing to Gremio. Those from Porto Alegre, who would later be crowned, prevailed in Guayaquil 3-0, enough to prevent the 1-0 in favor of Barcelona SC in Brazil from knocking them down. In the other key were the Argentines Lanús (winner) and River Plate.
This 2021 the Ecuadorian idol will have to overcome the powerful Flamengo if he intends to play the final in Montevideo, at the legendary Centenario stadium, on November 27.
5 wins so far in the 2021 Cup
Only in this edition of the Copa Libertadores, the bullfighting team has accumulated five successes, the result of the victories against Santos FC (0-2), The Strongest (4-0), Boca Juniors (1-0) and Santos FC (3 -1) in the group stage. In the round of 16 he defeated Vélez Sarsfield (3-1), while in the quarterfinals he tied both games with Fluminense and advanced to the semifinals by visiting goal in Rio de Janeiro. (D)
