Astronomers discover a “Super-Earth”

A group of astronomers have discovered a ten billion year old “Super-Earth”, located 280 light years from our planet.

About 1.5 times the size of Earth, it sits outside the solar system and revolves around a very old Milky Way star, CNN reported on Tuesday.

A “Super-Earth” is a planet with a surface similar to that of Earth. It is rocky like the Earth, but it is three times as massive.

Named TOI-561b, it would be one of the oldest planets to be discovered.

TOI-561b is an extremely hot planet. Researchers estimate that the average surface temperature is 1,726 degrees Celsius, making it unable to accommodate life.
