Ainsley-Maitland Niles ‘private talks’ put an end to Everton’s hopes of releasing the Arsenal midfielder

Mikel Arteta has addressed the late transfer deadline day drama surrounding Ainsley Maitland-Niles after Everton’s interest was turned down.

The Blues made a late move to bring the Arsenal man to Goodison Park on loan as they tried to secure endorsement and competition for Seamus Coleman during the 2021/22 campaign.

However, the Gunners were unwilling to let their player go, despite the 24-year-old taking to social media and asking his club to allow him to leave.

On the day of the transfer deadline, Maitland-Niles met with Arteta in which it was made clear what the plans would be for him at the Emirates Stadium, and a decision was made that he would not leave the club.

And the Arsenal manager now addressed the situation and made it clear how happy to see his player stay in North London this season.

Arteta said in his pre-Norwich press conference: “We have a lot of private conversations with the players, which we think the role they can play in the team is always discussed openly, but in private.

“That is the way we resolved issues, and the way one was resolved.

“I’m happy that he stayed, it was our intention. He’s another player on the team. “
