Ten years ago, Plácido Domingo sang for almost seven thousand people in the Krumlov car park, which was converted into a concert hall. Then he returned to the Czech Republic several more times – this time to Prague. In the capital, he conducted the opera Don Giovanni and also organized his competition of young singing talents.
According to the president of the festival, Jaromír Boháč, it was not difficult to get the busy singer back to Krumlov. “Because he, like me, honors that if something is promised, it should be kept. And when he closed his twentieth year with his gala concert, he said that he would be very happy if he could return to Český Krumlov on some other big anniversary. So we promised ourselves that if everything was going so that the concert could take place, it would happen, “he explained.
We’ve expanded our opera audience, says Domingo
This time Domingo will perform for a smaller audience. There is a capacity of seventeen hundred seats in the Brewery Garden. Adriana Kučerová and Štěpánka Pučálková will sing with him. “In addition to orchestral numbers, arias from world-famous operas by Verdi, Puccini and Mozart will be performed,” Boháč said. As in 2011, Domingo will include, for example, his favorite zarzuelas, ie the Spanish counterparts of operettas.
The 80-year-old singer is best known to the general public as one of the Three Tenors. A joint performance with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti at the 1990 World Cup dug a new chapter in opera. “It attracted many new people to the opera who fell in love with it. I think we are responsible for expanding the opera audience, “says Domingo.
Sorry for the harassment
In recent years, however, he has been talked about not only in connection with his gold in his throat. More than thirty women have accused him of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment, especially at the beginning of his career. Domingo initially denied the allegations, but at the beginning of 2020 he finally did he apologized and asked his former colleague for forgiveness.
“I did not notice this problem,” Jaromír Boháč answered when asked whether this situation, which led, for example, to the termination of Domingo’s collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, did not complicate the organization of Krumlov’s performance.
Also Sail, Moren and Cobham
Last year, the organizers canceled the summer date due to coronavirus and prepared a replacement event with Czech artists in September. Even the thirtieth year, instead of the traditional summer, takes place in autumn.
The organizers also included another opera gala concert in the program. Bass baritone Adam Plachetka prepared a Mozart evening with young singers. On the anniversary of Antonín Dvořák’s birth, the Spanish violinist Leticia Morenová will perform his violin concerto. “The world icon of percussion instruments is Billy Cobham, and this is one of my youthful dreams of having him at the festival,” Boháč mentioned another guest.
In the morning on the opening day, not all concerts were sold out, according to the president of the show, there are still a few tickets left for Plácido Domingo.
