Aceh Health Office records four cases of polio in Aceh – ANTARA News Riau Archipelago

Banda Aceh (ANTARA) – The Aceh Health Office recorded four cases of polio or type two paralysis in the province, one of whom is still undergoing therapy at the Zainoel Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh.

“The first case is undergoing physiotherapy, while the other three cases are at their homes, because they are asymptomatic,” said Head of Disease Prevention and Control of the Aceh Health Service Iman Murahman in Banda Aceh, Thursday.

He explained that the three children who were infected with the polio virus were the same as the first case child, that is, they did not have a complete history of basic immunization at all, so they were at high risk of contracting the virus.

“So, in the area of Mane, Pidie, the risk is indeed high, because the complete basic immunization rate there is very low,” he said.

Initially, a case of polio infected a seven-year-old boy in Mane District, Pidie. After further development, the government found three new cases who were also infected with type two polio virus, but had no symptoms.

Development of the first case, his party took 21 stool specimens from children in the local area. Of that number, only 19 specimens were suitable for laboratory examination in Jakarta, and three children tested positive for polio infection.

“These three children, one aged 2 years and 5 months, then 1 year and 11 months, and another aged 5 years. They are indeed asymptomatic, unlike the first case which was symptomatic (paralyzed),” he said.

Currently, the three newly infected children are at their respective residences, without having to undergo hospital treatment, because they have no symptoms.

Even so, medical officers from the health service continued to carry out epidemiological steps to find the source of the three children being infected with the polio virus.

“There is no medical treatment for these three children, because there is no cure for polio. Because they are also not sick, and have no symptoms, so there is no special medical treatment,” he said.
