With SV Darmstadt 98, another promotion candidate in the 2nd Bundesliga failed against Fortuna Düsseldorf. This opens up new opportunities for the competition in the table.
Darmstadt lost 1:2 (0:2) on matchday 33 and remains second in the table with 57 points behind Schalke 04 with 59 points.
But that could change over the weekend. Werder Bremen (57 points) could take second place, Hamburger SV (54 points) could pass thanks to the better goal difference and FC St. Pauli (54 points) could at least draw level on points.
|Team||33rd matchday||34th matchday|
|Schalke||St. Pauli (H)||Nürnberg (A)|
|Bremen||Oh (A)||Regensburg (H)|
|HSV||Hannover (H)||Rostock (A)|
|St. Pauli||Schalke (A)||Düsseldorf (H)|
1. FC Nuremberg with 51 points still has a purely theoretical chance of being relegated. For Fortuna Dusseldorf there is neither hope upwards nor danger downwards.
Early double strike: Düsseldorf quickly clearly ahead
After just a few minutes, Düsseldorf was 2-0 up. Emmanuel Iyoha completed an assist by Felix Klaus from the right with a low shot into the left corner (3rd minute). Matthias Zimmermann raised a little later: again Klaus provided the template on the right side, Zimmermann only had to insert it (10th). Klaus later hit the post (31st). Darmstadt only had better opportunities just before the break.
Darmstadt only with the connection – both teams at the end of ten
Darmstadt came out better at half-time and after further opportunities to connect. Tobias Kempe converted a penalty kick on the bottom left after Luca Pfeiffer was fouled by the hurrying out Düsseldorf goalkeeper Kastenmeier. Darmstadt missed several good chances, the equalizer was no longer possible.
Both teams finished the game with ten players. After a duel, Darmstadt’s Klaus Gjasula saw yellow-red, Daniel Ginczek red for kicking in the same scene (87th).
“Many of the boys were crying because they wanted to fulfill a dream“Darmstadt coach Torsten Lieberknecht reacted to the defeat after the final whistle in the Sportschau interview. “Many of the boys have never played in the 1st Bundesliga. We’re rebuilding the boys now. You don’t have to hang your head for long. Just as Fortuna played against us professionally today, I hope that maybe the others will help us tomorrow too.”
Darmstadt now against Paderborn, Düsseldorf near St. Pauli
On the last day of the game, both teams remain involved in their own way in the battle for promotion. Darmstadt needs a win in the home game against Paderborn in the fight for the top places, Düsseldorf plays at St. Pauli, a candidate for promotion. All games will kick off at 3.30pm on May 15th.
