In Italy, there is a ‘cafe sospeso’ culture where coffee is paid in advance for neighbors in need.
It is a way of sharing unique to Italy where coffee is a part of life.
It is said that sharing a ‘cup of coffee’ has become more precious as the economy becomes more difficult due to the prolonged corona virus.

A cafe in Rome where special coffee is prepared.
The ‘Cafe Sospeso’ donation box, which means ‘coffee left over,’ contains a receipt for the change and extra coffee left by the customer.
In this cafe alone, several homeless people drink coffee for free every day in this cafe, where the person who orders the coffee pays an extra cup of coffee to give it to neighbors in need.
Coffee is considered a staple in Italy.
If you can’t afford a cup of coffee, it means you can’t enjoy a human life.
‘Cafe Sospeso’ started from the sharing culture of Neapolitan people who calculated a cup in advance and went out for neighbors who had difficulty drinking coffee during World War II.
Since then, as the ‘Cafe Sospeso’ movement spread across the country, the number of businesses participating in sharing increased.
From basic foodstuffs to gelato, each one is continuing the ‘saupeso’ movement in various ways.
However, as the economy of the common people collapses due to the prolonged corona virus, the ‘Sopeso’ movement, which boasts a long tradition, is also experiencing a crisis of existence.
Last year, Rome City Hall officially identified 18 participating businesses in ‘Sopeso’.
When I checked in person, about half of them said that they were unable to continue the ‘Sopeso’ movement due to difficult circumstances.
Italy is expected to take a long time to recover its pre-coronavirus economy, with more than a few thousand confirmed cases a day.
It is a difficult time, but the sense of solidarity of ‘Sopeso’ helping neighbors who are more difficult than myself is the driving force in overcoming the epidemic crisis.
