In and post sport’s career injuries-Sports Chat

Have you ever imagined begging a doctor to remove your legs to ease pain? Well, Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta begged a doctor to amputate his legs due to the unbearable pain he felt after retiring from football in 2005. The former striker, who netted 56 times in 78 international matches for Argentina and Terrorized Defenses in Serie A for years, suffered terribly from the stress he had put on his body during a 17-year career. After retiring he was unable to walk due to lack of cartilage in his legs. Batistuta wet the bed as he was unable to face the pain of walking to the bathroom. He pleaded with doctors to remove his legs to ease the pain. Instead Batistuta had screws fitted into one of his legs which largely ended the pain. The football star is only one among many professional sports people who find themselves dealing with chronic, sports-related injuries—and the costs of treating their conditions. Reggie Williams, a former record-setting linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals said he had two dozen knee operations following his 13-year NFL career. Other sports icons to suffer from post career injuries are sprints and long jump legend Carl Lewis, Diego Maradona and Brazilian Pele who is now confined in a wheelchair. Back home former KTM midfielder Rishadi Shedu who has just comeback from India for treatment is in studio together with Sofapaka FC physiotherapist Whilhemus Mukoya to talk to us about their experiences.
